* About this course *
Games Toolkit (Spring 2020) was a game making class focused on open source, free-to-use, and artist-made game development tools. We used and discussed these tools for both the production of games, was well as an examination of the ethos of tool-making itself. The class website and all student work is linked here, and archived at toolkit.itch.io.
We can’t celebrate our accomplishments in person this year, so instead we’re throwing a party in a 1988 Hypercard Application that draws a map of the infamous steam tunnels that run under Carnegie Mellon University.
Class participants were Sophia Cao, Rigved Deshpande, Ilan Elovitz, Joseph Horowitz, Tiger Jia, Justin Lee, Cindy Liu, Grace Liu, Xiang Luo, Dani Moll, Vivian Noh, Michael Poirier, & Lea Albaugh. Class led by Everest Pipkin.
This showcase was inspired by this Hypercard stack, running in a hacked LIKELIKE-online & built out of Hypercard Graphics Pack, ChiKareGo, and MacOS Classic Sound Pack v1.4.
PROJECT 1 : GAMES WITHIN GAMES
Prompt: Design a “game” to be played inside of another game. This may be a hack of rules, systems or protocols, or designed play that is against the intention of the designer. It may be a bot, a manifesto, or a series of instructions. Consider the edges or boundaries of the system, and what is exploitable and interesting there. The turn-in can be language (a system of rules) or a game/hack/mod (playable). Regardless, make an experience that can be replicated or played by others, whether written or code-based.

OR-
Use the lessons learned in looking at and discussing artist tools to create your own toy, tool, or toolkit. This may be software, or it may be text-based design principles to help others make work.

PROJECT 3 : GAME JAMS & WIDER COMMUNITY
Prompt: Over our break, find a game jam on itch.io that is not part of our class and join, making something in the context of the jam. If the jam allows it, you may choose to extend or adapt previous work from this or other classes, or make a vignette scene out of a longer project. Not finding a game jam that interests you? You can make your own.

PROJECT 4: OFFICE SOFTWARE, REMOTE PRESENCE, A GIFT
Prompt: Think about Google Forms, slidedecks, spreadsheets, chatbots, phone trees, email, file managers, Hypercard, forums, FTP. Any social / online platform made for connecting with others at a distance, including multiplayer online games and other social spaces.
Use any of these (or previous) tools to make a game or piece of software that is intended as a gift for one person.
OR-
Use a platform of mediated distance to throw an event or party for a group of people, and document it in some way.
Think about how office-adjacent or productivity-oriented tools can be altered to feel personal, intimate, or generous.
